Irrigation ditches will be running soon in Canon City which means lateral ditches and pipes along property boundaries will also be flowing with water.
Please make sure that any irrigation lateral pipe, ditch, or drainage ditch along your property is free of debris, weeds, and excess sediment. Regardless of whether you own water rights or use the irrigation water, it is the responsibility of the property owners or residents to keep the ditches adjacent to the property free of debris which may obstruct the free flow of water (City of Canon City Municipal Code 19.10.060).
Remember that this water is used for irrigating crops, yards, and gardens. The irrigation ditches and lateral eventually empty back into the Arkansas River, so anything in those may end up in the river. Please do not dump any trash, pet/animal waste, yard waste, or any other substance in the main irrigation ditches or laterals. Trash and debris may plug trash racks or culverts which can lead to the overflow of water. You can also help keep trash and debris out of the ditches by not littering City streets and making sure the lids to garbage dumpsters are kept securely closed to prevent blowing trash from entering the ditches.
We thank you for your efforts to keep our city and waterways clean!
