Ashley Smith, Cañon City Mayor, and City Council proclaimed 2022 as Cañon City's 150th Sesquicentennial Anniversary and Celebration during the Monday, April 4, 2022, City Council Meeting.
WHEREAS, in 1859, Canon City was laid out and the first log cabin was built on the west side of the hogbacks above Soda Springs, becoming platted in 1860; and,
WHEREAS, in 1861, the First Territorial Legislature authorized the formation of Fremont County with Canon City the county seat; and,
WHEREAS, on April 2, 1872, the City of Canon City was incorporated; and,
WHEREAS, over the years Canon City has grown into a city known for its flowing water, many public parks and trails, fossil discoveries, Skyline Drive, the Royal Gorge and small-town living; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Canon City and its citizens in 2022 proudly preserve the City's heritage in its appearance as well as in governance, creating a captivating place to visit and live; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, in recognition of those 150 years, I, Ashley Smith, Mayor of Canon City, Colorado, have the distinct honor of proclaiming 2022, as:
Canon City's 150th Sesquicentennial Anniversary and Celebration
And urge the residents of our community and visitors to support and celebrate Canon City by taking part in the many activities throughout the year.
