CLG Survey Project

Cañon City Historic Preservation Commission is delighted to share news of an important survey project being funded through History Colorado’s CLG Grant Program. This project will focus on surveying 20 residential properties and two churches that were home to African American individuals, families, and places of worship in Cañon City between 1902 and 1937. The goals of the project are to honor the legacy of African American residents in our community, preserve valuable historical information, and promote greater public awareness of Cañon City’s diverse heritage. Please click on the links below to view a map of some of the know African American historical resources of the early 1900s and a list of some of the properties that will be a part of this survey project with the names of the African American families that lived or worshiped there.

Design Guidelines - Public Input

The City’s Historic Preservation Commission is seeking public input on the draft Design Guidelines for the Historic Downtown area. The Commission will be holding two public meetings to share the draft guidelines with the public, one on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 at 9:00 am at the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center (612 Royal Gorge Blvd.) and the other meeting on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at 5:30 pm, also at the Museum.

The Historic Preservation Commission meets at 4:00 p.m. on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Meetings are in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 128 Main Street, Cañon City, Colorado.
