The City of Cañon City is inviting community-minded volunteers with a knowledge of local history, historic preservation, and/or architecture to serve on the City’s new Historic Preservation Commission.
This commission meets once a month (unless there is no business) and functions as an advisory board to the City Council on matters concerning the overall preservation of the city’s historic character. The committee will publicly review applications for construction, alteration, restoration, or demolition affecting proposed or designated historic districts, sites, and structures. The committee will also set criteria and design standards for review of historic structures and develop a plan to help educate the public about historic preservation. In addition to regular meetings, special workshop sessions may be conducted on occasion. The member of the committee will serve as an alternate for two years.
Any person interested in donating a few hours every month to help preserve the historical character of the community is urged to send a letter of interest, outlining your experience and reasons for wanting to serve on the Historic Preservation Commission to: Cañon City Council, c/o City Clerk Cindy Foster Owens, P.O. Box 1460, Cañon City, CO 81215-1460 before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023. Interested persons willing to serve do not need to reside within the city limits of Cañon City. You may call Lisa Studts, Museum Director at 719.269.9036 for more information.
